Regional Archives

archives.jpgThe vision of the Buffalo Park Centre always included the formation of a regional archive. Most of the region's archives are stored in museums and libraries, or with municipal governments and community and service groups. Many materials also remain in private hands. Consultants have identified the need for a centralized archival facility in our region.

The advantage of a regional archive is that "all original materials relative to a region are kept in one place and stored according to the specific environmental conditions required for archival materials and they can be accessed more readily by researchers, historians, genealogists, and so on." "The Archives Society of Alberta would like to voice its support for your ongoing efforts to develop a regional archival program for Wainwright and district. There are few archival programs in east-Central Alberta; consequently, there is no local place to preserve the documents, photographs, and other records created by local residents, families and organizations that have done and continue to do so much to contribute to a sense of community within the region. This archival element of the region's historical resources is an important part of the overall heritage of Wainwright and the surrounding region, and it is commendable that you are addressing it as part of your wider heritage plan."
